Spring 2011 Announcements

The Historical Ethnomusicology SIG will hold its annual Business Meeting at the upcoming annual conference of the Society for Ethnomusicology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA (17-20 November, 2011). This will be the final meeting chaired by Professor David Hebert, as Dr. Ann Lucas will take leadership of the SIG into 2012 and 2013.

Members will be updated on the 2011 BFE session (announced below), and discuss planning of an Organized Roundtable on issues in historical methodology for inclusion in the 2012 conference in New Orleans, as well as a proposal for a special issue of an ethnomusicology journal (in 2013) on contemporary issues in music historiography. There will also be plans for a Histo-Ethno SIG dinner, an opportunity for voluntary donations (for website costs), and discussion of voting for a new Chair-Elect, as Ann's current role becomes vacated. We will also discuss transfership and effective future use of the Histo-Ethno SIG email (historicalethnomusicology@gmail.com), SIG public blog (http://historicalethnomusicology.blogspot.com), and SIG online forum (http://histoethno.ning.com) for planning of Histo-Ethno SIG projects and activities.

The Historical Ethnomusicology Special Interest Group sponsored a session at the annual meeting of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology, 7-10 April, 2011, in Cornwall, United Kingdom. Panel speakers included Dr. Ann Lucas (California State University, Fresno, USA), and Dr. Jonathan McCollum (Washington College, USA), and the session was chaired by Dr. David Hebert (Grieg Academy, Bergen University College, Norway).

Nearing the end of March, 2011 . . . the SIG now has 50 members in its online forum, and plans are in the works for construction of an open-access online annotated bibliography of historical ethnomusicology, submission of book proposals on the topic of theory and method in this specialized field, and a proposal to upgrade from a Special Interest Group to a full-fledged and permanent Section of the international scholarly organization Society for Ethnomusicology.

This new website serves as the public face of the Special Interest Group for Historical Ethnomusicology, a division of the international scholarly organization Society for Ethnomusicology (SEM). We intend to announce various activities, projects and events on this site.

The Special Interest Group for Historical Ethnomusicology was established within SEM in 2005 in order to bring together SEM members with an interest in historical studies. Membership in the group is open to all scholars interested in the study of music history and the application of historical methodologies within the field of ethnomusicology.

Mission
The mission of the Special Interest Group for Historical Ethnomusicology is to support historical studies in the field of ethnomusicology, primarily through the sponsorship and promotion of discussion, events and publications related to historical approaches in the study of music. This group provides:

a forum for music scholars with historical interests to discuss issues related to the study of music history;
an organizational basis to plan and execute events that focus on historical topics and methodologies;
an information network where scholars can share and promote publications and activities related to the study of music history
